I. 
Activating Prior Knowledge

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, along with several others are often referred to as the “Founding Fathers of the United States of America.” It was under their leadership that the foundation for our country was laid.

Over the last couple of hundred years, there has been a great deal of dispute by historians as to the religious/philosophical beliefs of these “Founding Fathers.” It is upon these religious/philosophical beliefs that a great deal of conflict has arisen over the interpretation of the Constitution of the United States of America.

II.  Setting A Purpose for Reading

As you read the following quotes by the “Founding Fathers,” try to identify their religious/philosophical beliefs. Think about how these beliefs shaped our country and created what has come to be known as the “American ideals.”

III.  Reading the Text (Read, Re-read, and Read Again)

George Washington

1.  “The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion.”

2.  “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.”

3.  “Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

4.  “Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”

5.  “I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.”

6.  “If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known, that we are at all times ready for War.”

7.  "The name of AMERICAN, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discriminations."

8.  "(T)he foundation of our national policy will be laid in the pure and immutable principles of private morality; ...the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained..."  George Washington, First Inaugural, April 30 1789

Thomas Jefferson

1.  "... God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty.... And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." - Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 (C.J. Boyd, Ed., 1950)

2.  "Can the liberties of a nation be sure when we remove their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people, that these liberties are a gift from God? 

3.  “A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicity.” -  Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address.

4.  “Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting "Jesus Christ," so that it would read "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination.” - Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography, in reference to the Virginia Act for Religious Freedom

5.  “I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. 7.  “No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him.”

8.  “To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association—the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.”

Benjamin Franklin

1.  "Any people that would give up liberty for a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety."

2.  "We must all hang together, or, assuredly, we shall all hang separately." - Benjamin Franklin at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776

3.  "You desire to know something of my religion. It is the first time I have been questioned upon it. But I cannot take your curiosity amiss, and shall endeavour in a few words to gratify it. Here is my creed. I believe in one God, Creator of the Universe. That He governs it by His providence. That He ought to be worshipped. That the most acceptable service we render Him is doing good to His other children. That the soul of man is immortal, and will be treated with justice in another life respecting its conduct in this. These I take to be the fundamental principles of all sound religion, and I regard them as you do in whatever sect I meet with them.”
"As to Jesus of Nazareth, my opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the system of Morals and his Religion, as he left them to us, the best the World ever saw or is likely to see; but I apprehend it has received various corrupt changes, and I have, with most of the present Dissenters in England, some doubts as to his divinity; though it is a question I do not dogmatize upon, having never studied it, and think it needless to busy myself with it, when I expect soon an opportunity of knowing the Truth with less trouble. 1) well, the religous belif of the statment is that when the founding fathers were there, they didn't belive in God.

Part 1. George Washington was saying that the government of the united states was not making any sense to the christian religion and he meant that our religion should not concerned the government and the national policy is always involved with the Americans.
Part 2. Thomas Jefferson was saying that the government was wise to the people and he wanted to make better lives for the people in need and help the government with there laws and rules to people and make it fair.
Part 3. Benjamin Franklin was saying that people shouldn't give up on the liberty because we should stay together to form a better world for people and don't give up in yourself and always believe in what you can do for the world and make better decisions. Also always treat others the way you want to be treated.

This meqns that if you didn't teach the bible or the word of god then you can't govern a nation.

P2:Thomas Jefferson said that the government was trying to make better lives for prople who neede help, and that men should injury one another then that will lead to improvement to their laws.

2) Benjamin Franklin's idea that has become an American ideal is when he said " Everybody must hang together or we will hang seperately." and " People who give up liberty for temporary safety doesnt deserve liberty or safety."

3) I agree with George Washington when he says " A nation can't be run without a God and bible." I agree because God and bible teach what you should do in life, it helps shape the government. The bible is like a handbook for life, how to get through it the right way. God and bible are the two things that tell the government and the people the rights and wrongs in life.

Part 1 response- In the passage for George Washington i found that it clearly states ,“It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.” andif he was the 1st president then he had to govern the country of corse and so he must have governed it with the belief of God and practiced the bible and at the end it stated, "(T)he foundation of our national policy will be laid in the pure and immutable principles of private morality; ...the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained..." Meaning that if you basically disobey God then he will not be happy with that at all so therefore he will not smile down upon you due to your sins.

Part 2 response- George Washing believed that he had to govern his nation firmly because in the text it stated “I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” , He wanted to do that to have good man before him because without the rules that were set and the firmness that was used there would be many troubled men then ever.

Part 3 response- I agree with George Washington 100% because I am also a christian and I also agree that if he did not use the firmness that he needed to rule the country then we would have many difficulties with everyone even and especially in today's time! Part 1) I picked Thomas Jefferson, he was a christian. We know that because of this one quote I found " A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion." This quote and others helped us to know that Thomas Jefferson was a christian. He also stated on the preamble about Jesus Christ and how we should live.
Part 2) I chose George Washington, he believed that you should govern your nation firmly. I agree with him 100%. When you are going to run a nation you can't be Mr. Nice Guy. You must be firm. He said this quote “I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” That way he could have good people in his nation, not bad.
Part 3) I agree with Washington all the way. I told you in part two how I felt about Washington's beliefs. I agree that you have to have a lot of firmness if you are going to run a government. I am a christian as well so I agree with his religion. I especially believe that now, like today you need a lot of firmness while running a government. If we didn't really hammer down on laws, i think that people would be breaking them left and right. That is why I believe with Washington.

In adition to my reasponses i used George Washinton for 1 and 2 and that he is the one who siad that the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion and that It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible and the nation can NOT be founded without a christion belief.

In addition to reasponses 2 was George washington and his belief and/or value that we need to work hardrer if we want to succeed in securing peace. As an amareican ideal we must always prepare are armed forces to be ready to protect amarica. so we need to always train and divelop new technology to never let our gard down.

1) I think that George Washington is a Christian because he says that “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the bible.” He also says that a nation wouldn’t be successful if the government didn’t use the laws of order and right that Heaven has ordained itself. George Washington governed his nation based on the words of God and the bible. He also governed based on the laws of Heaven to create laws for his nation.
2) Benjamin Franklin said that “The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness, but you have to catch it yourself.” That means that you can pursue or have happiness only if you get it yourself. You have to make yourself want to have happiness. You have to do things like working for charity to give yourself a sort of happiness of giving.
3) I agree with George Washington all the way because I am also a Christian and God always gives us a plan for everything. He gives us a plan for our day, how to run a government and for how we will live our lives. He also said that a government needs to give lots of firmness to the people of a nation so they know that they don’t want to mess around and to get them to do what you want them to do like pay taxes on time.

Part 1: I found in the passage that Thomas Jefferson was a christian. In his writings he said "Can the liberties of a nation be sure when we remove their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people, that these liberties are a gift from God?" which in saying he said that he believed in a higher power in which making his belief Christianity or deism. He also wrote "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion" in which making
Christianity a more possible religion.
Part 2: I chose a quote in which Benjamin Franklin said. He stated "We must all hang together, or, assuredly, we shall all hang separately." which i believe means we must all come together when in need or not to help one other , if not you will be bring your self to your own death.
Part 3: i agree with George Washington when he said "Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” I belief that he is saying that government isn't something to be afraid of its something you should turn to when you acquire help. Its a huge part of your life but you still control it.

Part one- Thomas Jefferson was apart of the deism religion. Evidence to show this is in quote seven where it says "No man has a natural right to commit agression on the equal rights of another,and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him".

Part two- Benjamin Franklin's quote "We must all hang together,or, asuredly, we shall all hang seperatley is apart of the American Ideals. Also his quote were it says "God grant that not oly the love of liberty but a throrough knowledge of the rights of man may and peruade an the nations of the earth, so tat a philosopher may set his foot anywhere on its surface and say: This is my country.
Part two- I chose George Washington and i agreed and disagreed with some of his quotes. I agreed with three,five,seven, and eight.
I disagreed with one,two,four,and six. I agreed and disagreed because in my opinion some of his quotes were true and others were false. An example from one of my disagreements is number four because Michelle Obama got involved with trying to help children be healthy and I think that is a good thing.

1. Ben Franklin as an adult was Deist. he was quoted as saying that he had some doubts to the divinity of Jesus of Nazareth. In general most Franklin scholars have found him to be quite moderate in his attitude toward religion. Franklin did not attempt to "wither christianity by ridicule or bludgeon it to death by argument."

Part 1 – Thomas Jefferson was a Christian. We can assume this by his 2nd quote whenever he asks if these liberties could be a gift from God. In Thomas Jefferson’s 4th quote, we see he talks about a departure from the plan of Jesus Christ. This would fall under the category of being Christian. Jefferson has a quote, “The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.” He does not criticize people for their other religion, but not including that there is one God for his injuries, gives us a hint.

Part 2 – Benjamin Franklin believed that freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and nature. This is a part of the American ideals in which everyone has equal rights and all are free.

Part 3 – George Washington stated that Government is a force. I strongly agree with him, some of the things that the government forces us to do, we would never do on our own. For example, paying taxes is a much hated thing, but it needs to be done so we can receive our own services, and maintain our country.

Part 1) Thomas Jefferson was Christian we can see this in most of his quote. On Thomas Jefferson's 4th quote it talks about "Jesus Christ" this helps us understand that Thomas Jefferson was a chirstian.

Part 2) Benjamin Franklin's 2nd qoute said: "We must all hang together, or, assuredly, we shall all hang separately." I think that this mean either we stay together or we stay separately.

Part 3: I agree with George Washington because on him quote number two he said “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.” Well basically what it is saying is that it is Impossible govern a nation without God

1.I believe that Thomas Jefferson was a Christian due to what he said in a a sentence about Jesus Christ expressing his feelings on how he feels about his religion and Jesus Christ. The quote was " A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ the holy author of our religion."

2.The idea of Benjamin Franklin that has turned into and american ideal is when he says; " People who give up liberty for temporary safety doesn't deserve liberty or safety." & “Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and nature.”

3. I disagree with George Washington when he says; " A nation can't be run without a God and bible." I disagree because the bible and god doesn't always prevent things from happening. Although it does give you prior knowledge on things. But innocent people die and god doesn't prevent that. Our government is a lot better in economy because we take the right choices not always because god and the bible help us we just have to have hope and believe in ourselves.

Part one- I belive that, based on his quotes, George Washington was a part of the Christian religion. There is one quote in particular that leads me to believe this, “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.”. This quote lead me to believe George Washington was a Christian because he says that without God and the Bible, you could never properly lead a country. The Bible is specific to the Christian religion so therefor, he must be a Christian.

Part two- One ideal from all of these quotes from all three men is liberty. The ideal of liberty is what this nation was founded upon and I think Benjamin Franklin described this ideal in one of his quotes "Any people that would give up liberty for a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety.". This quote means that liberty and freedom should be your top priority even if you have to sacrifice your safety for it. It also means that if you give up your liberty and freedom for safety, you dont deserve to have liberty or safety.

Part three- I agree with George Washington's philosophies because I am a Christian and based off these quotes, I believe him to be aswell. While I am a Christian, I'm not one of those people who is going to shove what I believe in down other people's throats and I think that he is that way too.

Part 1: I chose Jefferson, he is a Christian. In the preamble, he says and believes, "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion." This quote means that Jesus Christ is the center of the religion, like he wrote the bible to be the inspirable book to go on and on and be the center of everyone that reads and believes in it.

Part 2: Next, I chose Franklin. A value that became a part of "American Ideals", is what Benjamin said at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 which was, " We must all hang together, or, assuredly, we shall all hang separately." This value/belief means that if you cannot come together and be one, then just go on your own way.

Part 3: Finally, is Washington. I agree with George's beliefs and values. I agree when he said, "It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible." I agree because almost ever nation have a religion, maybe different than others or maybe the same or similiar. I believe government is also a force because if it wasn't, we would be all over the place, people would be getting hurt and killed (crazy people out there), and global warming will most likely start if everyone is littering and not recycling. When George said, "If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known, that we are at all times ready for War." This quote means that if you disagree in something, that you should spread it with everyone else and rebel. If everyone agree with you and join your side, its going to make some people or group mad, then that all lead up to......A war.

George Washington
1. The government is not founded on Christian Religion. The philosophical belief for this one is Atheism.
2. You can't govern a nation without God and the bible. This one is Christianity.
3. Reason and Experience forbid USA to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.
4. The government is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. This one is a government belief.
5. To maintain the most enviable of all title, the character of an honest man. People believe in this one.
6. We do what desires us to do. This probably goes to the religion that you believe in
7. Americans exalt the just pride of patriotism. I think that this one goes to Patriotism.
8. Private Morality of their national policy. This one is the national policy which is pretty much the government.

Part 2:
1. I picked Benjamin Franklin because he said,” People that give up liberty and safety, doesn’t deserve safety and liberty. This means that if you give it up than you are kind of giving it away to someone else even though you think you still own it. I picked this quote because it explained how we work here in the US. We use this quote about everyday without even noticing that we are. We normally us it when it come to voting every four years because we are using are freedom even though that we really don’t care about anybody else other than the president. That is why you should take pride in your liberty and safety because it can be easily taken away.

Part 3:
1. I agree with Benjamin Franklin because of who he believes in and also because he sees important life and structure for every citizen in America. He wrote a lot of quotes about how people should live, and one of them was”We must all stay together, or, assuredly, we shall stay together.” This quote is telling us that we need to either stay together or you can stay separate but either way you have to make your own decisions in life no matter what your friends say. I love Benjamin Franklin because he tells us things that are really true in life even though we think they are.

1. I believe that George Washington was a Christian because of a major quote."It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.” This showed me that he thought God helped anyone govern a country.
2.One quotes from Benjamin Franklin is liberty. The idea of liberty built this nation. I think Benjamin Franklin described this idea in a quote "Any people that would give up liberty for a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety." This means that if you would give up liberty you should not be safe from harm.
3.I agree with George Washington's religious views because I am a Christian. I am a Christian and a try to spread the relegion through my friends and family.
