I. Activating Prior Knowledge
While the Roman Empire did not fall in one giant swoop, its decline and ultimate collapse occurred over a long period of time. As we have studied, the key issues that led to the collapse of the Roman Empire can be categorized into four areas: political issues, social issues, economic issues, and military issues. What were some of the issues that we discussed in class that led to the decline and collapse of the Roman Empire?

II.  Setting A Purpose for Reading
In this passage, Salvian is comparing the Romans to the Barbarians. As you read, identify the key groups that made up the "Barbarians." How were the Romans and Barbarians similar? different? Why did many of the Romans flee to the Barbarians?

III.  Reading the Text (Read, Re-Read, and Read Again)

Introduction:
Salvian, a Christian priest, writing about 440, undertook in his
book Of God's Government to show that the misfortunes of the time were only the divinely inflicted punishments which the people of the Empire had brought upon themselves by their wickedness and corruption. He contends that the Romans, who had once been virtuous and heroic, had lapsed into a degradation which rendered them, in spite of their civilization and advantages, far inferior to the untutored but sturdy barbarian.

STOP! Can you answer this question? If not, go back and re-read the passage.
According to Salvian, why did the Roman Empire come to an end?

Romans & Barbarians - Salvian
In what respects can our customs be preferred to those of the Goths and Vandals, or even compared with them? And first, to speak of affection and mutual charity (which, our Lord teaches, is the chief virtue, saying, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another "), almost all barbarians, at least those who are of one race and kin, love each other, while the Romans persecute each other. For what citizen does not envy his fellow citizen ?

STOP! Can you answer this question? If not, go back and re-read the passage.
Do you agree or disagree with Salvian that the greatest virtue is to "love thy neighbor as thyself"? Why or why not?

What citizen shows to his neighbor full charity? [The Romans oppress each other with exactions] nay, not each other : it would be quite tolerable, if each suffered what he inflicted. It is worse than that ; for the many are oppressed by the few, who regard public exactions (taxes) as their own peculiar right, who carry on private traffic under tile guise of collecting the taxes. And this is done not only by nobles, but by men of lowest rank; not by judges only, but by judges' subordinates. For where is the city even the town or village which has not as many tyrants as it has curials ? . . . What place is there, therefore, as I have said, where the substance of widows and orphans, nay even of the saints, is not devoured by the chief citizens?

STOP! Can you answer this question? If not, go back and re-read the passage.
According to Salvian, who was stealing from the Roman people?

. . . None but the great is secure from the devastations of these plundering brigands, except those who arw themselves robbers. [Nay, the state has fallen upon such evil days that a man cannot be safe unless he is wicked] Even those in a position to protest against the iniquity which they see about them dare not speak lest they make matters worse than before.

STOP! Can you answer this question? If not, go back and re-read the passage.
According to Salvian, who was safe from the stealing and wickedness of the theives?

So the poor are despoiled, the widows sigh, the orphans are oppressed, until many of them, born of families not obscure, and liberally educated, flee to our enemies that they may no longer suffer the oppression of public persecution. They doubtless seek Roman humanity among the barbarians, because they cannot bear barbarian inhumanity among the Romans. And although they differ from the people to Whom they flee in manner and in language; although they are unlike as regards the fetid odor of the barbarians' bodies and garments, yet they would rather endure a foreign civilization among the barbarians than cruel injustice among the Romans.

STOP! Can you answer this question? If not, go back and re-read the passage.
According to Salvian, why did the citizens of Rome seek out the Barbarians?

IV. Personal Reflection – Respond to the following question in your blog. Be sure to include a quote from the text to support your response.

Part 1 - Response:  What evidence supports Salvian's belief that the corruption of Rome ultimately led to the collapse of the Roman Empire?
Part 2 - Response:  Based on the reading, if you were a Roman, would you choose to continue living in Rome or would you flee to one of the Barbarian tribes? Explain your reasoning.

V. Peer Reflection - Read three classmates’ response and respond to what they have written.

1.the roman empire came to a end because, according to Salvian, that in the book of God's Government had divineing punishments that the empire brought among themselves which led them to an end.
2.i aree that the greatest virtue is love thy neighbor as thyself because it means treat each other like the way you want to be treated which i think is fair.
3.The nobles, judges, and the judge's subordinates collect taxes but its like they are stealing from them.
4. A man that is safe from wickedness and stealing is if the man is wicked himself.
5.the citizens went to the barbarians because they took better care of them than the romans did

2)Yes I do believe that love thy neighbor is a big thing. You should keep your family close but you emenies closer which is say the same thing as love thy neighbor.

3)They could never get ahead because there where stealing from there own people.
4)It says people who arw themselves robbers.
5)They would rather endure a foreigh civilization among the barbavian than cruel injustice among the Romans.

Part2)I would stay in Rome to endure everything with my family instead of runninf to another country. The Romans was treated very badly.

1. According to Salvian, the Roman Empire collapsed because of the people that lived there. They went away because of taxes and the threat of being killed if they didn't pay taxes or if the people in control didn't like them.

2. I would chose to stay in the Roman Empire because the Barbarians were not civilized. They did not have a leader or a government meaning there were no rules. I would think this would cause a lot of chaos. Rome is a civilized empire and it has a leader and a government.

1. Well, Salvian was right about the corruption of Rome led to the decline of Rome; because the people who were suffering the injustice of Rome, they had decided to join the Barbarians in fighting against the Romans.
2. I would flee to a barbarian tribe because the injustice Rome would give me, and the attacks the barbarians caused was enough suffering for me. If I joined the barbarians, I would not have to pay any taxes to the Romans, and I would also have to stop worrying about the attacks the barbarians brought.

Part 1: Evidence that corruption in Rome led to it's decline would be that no one who isn't greedy or corrupted is safe from public persecution because when people become unsafe they leave or escape from whatever or whomever is making them unsafe. Corruption led to to the fall of Rome because citizens felt unsafe and left to be part of another society or group.

Part 2: If I were a Roman I would flee to the Barbarians because I would not want to be a part of a society where no one is loyal and the government is corrupted. Another reason to leave would be because of neighbors and all people not being charitable and kind like my religion says Iand they should be.

What evidence supports salvians belief that the curruption of Rome ultimitley lead to the fall of the Rome empire?

Part 1: the evidence I have is in stanza number one because it says that it took along period of time for the empire to fall and it also says they had political economical social and military issues, and that's what basically lead to the fall of it.

Part 2: based on the info I would probably stick to being the Romans because you should stick up for your side not be little babies and run or scurry because your being attacked by the barbarians. And I have always loved the Romans.

1)What evidence supports Salvian's belief that the corruption of Rome ultimately led to the collapse of the Roman Empire?
Salvian believed that Rome's corruption led to the collapse of the empire. Evidence that indicates he was correct mainly includes: acting barbarically, having military issues, problems involving politics, such as rulers, issues involving the community and society, economical issues: debts, credit, issues with bank-like actions and such. The Romans went from being a prosperous people, to making corrupt and wicked decisions.
2) If you were a Roman, would you choose to continue living in Rome or would you flee to one of the Barbarian tribes?
There are various and some positive reasons as to why either choice would work. If I stayed, I would have a wicked and harming environment in which I wouldn't necessarily enjoy myself. But, I would be somewhat secure from attacks because of the fierce and strong Roman military. If I left, I would have a minuscule amount of time to learn an entirely new language, way of life, and adapt to a whole new environment. My choice would most likely be to leave for a bit more sympathetic and caring home that a corrupt place full of illicit behavior, actions, gestures, and decisions.

Solders would not guard Rome is random people would go in and stead any thing because no one cared. The people were being taxed to much so they did not have money to feed their families. Then stores closed and then there was no food so people left. Then stone fell.

2. If I had a choice I to stay Rome or move to the barbarian tribes I would move to the barbarian tribe. I would not want to move to the Romen empire because they taxed to much and just because they were the biggest empire at that time did not meen that they were the best empire. I would move to the barbarian empire because it seemed that it was better because they had a lot of war and I would like a empire that was strong and lived to fight

Part 1- Response
Salvian’s belief that the corruption of Rome ultimately led to the collapse of the Roman empire is supported in the following evidence. He quoted that the people of the Roman Empire had brought the misfortunes of the time upon themselves due to their wickedness and corruption. He also quoted that even in spite of their advantages they had lapsed into a degradation and were inferior to the sturdy barbarian.

Part 2- Response
If I were a Roman I would chose to continue living in Rome. I would not flee to one of the Barbarian tribes. I would stay in Rome because this is my home. Slavians belief of the collaps of the Roman empire is the result of the persecution of eachother."By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another "), almost all barbarians, at least those who are of one race and kin, love each other, while the Romans persecute each other. For what citizen does not envy his fellow citizen ?"
Part 2
Based on the reading, I would rather flee to one of the Barbarian tribes because even the people that seem innocent like the orphans, widdows or saints are people that would steal, cheet and lie;as evident by this quote, "What place is there, therefore, as I have said, where the substance of widows and orphans, nay even of the saints, is not devoured by the chief citizens?"

A1. Their are many reasons that support Salvian's belief that Romes corruption. First the Romans took taxes from everybody even widows and orphans without deduction to the taxes. Another thing is that the only Roman people that did not get robbed were the people that were robbing other people. One other problem that accord was that the Roman government were taking money from there own people by taxes but did not put that money back in the community. The last and final reason is that the Roman people were getting so mistreated that they moved to the Barbarians so that they could get treated better.
A2. If I was part of the Roman society I would have fled to the Barbarians. I would have done this for a number of reasons one being that the Roman government was taking my money without putting it back in the community. Another reason is that they were getting robbed almost everyday and with the Barbarians that wouldn't happen. Especially if I was an orphan during these times I would move because I had to pay taxes and they weren't lowered even for that cause. These are the reasons that I rather move to the Barbarians if I were a Roman citizen.

1. The class said that economic and social problems were the cause of the fall of the roman empire.

2. the differences between the romans and the barbarians were that the romans were once a powerfull and the barbarians weren't that educated. the simularities were that over the years the romans became less intelligent just like the barbarians.

3. According to Salvian it was because the Romans grew less intelligent than the barbarians and the barbarians were stronger than the romans.

Yes I agree with it because it is saying we should treat our neighbors the way that we want to be treated.

According to Salvian the people of lowest rank in rome were stealing from the romans.

According to Salvian it was the robbers themselves who were safe.

According to Salvian it was because the romans couldn't deal with what the barbarians were doing to the roman people.

Part 1 - The eveidence that supports Silvian's belief that the corruption of Rome is what lead to the collapse of the Roman Empire, is that there was no togetherness among the Romans, there was nothing but evil and corruption, so they started to run to the Barbarians. This caused their empire to fall because no one was left to support anything.

Part 2 - If I were a Roman, I would have gone to the Barbarians also, because they treated one another as neighbors. There was more togetherness between the Barbarians.

Barbarians killed Romans in the end. That's a good reason to leave Rome.

1. There was corruption in Rome. This is true because there were no educated people in power. The emperors who were in power wasted the taxes collected on selfish gains. I believe that this ultimately led to the fall of Rome.
2. If I had a choice of continuing to live in Rome or flee to the barbarian tribes I would flee to the barbarian tribes because I wouldn’t want to be treated as poorly as some people were just because I didn’t have as much gold as someone else.

I agree with your response to #1 because the selfish emperors did have a lot to do with the economic issues that led to the fall of Rome.

Part 1 - Response: What evidence supports Salvian's belief that the corruption of Rome ultimately led to the collapse of the Roman Empire?
The reason for the collapse was political corruption and Praetorian Guard.

Part 2 - Response: Based on the reading, if you were a Roman, would you choose to continue living in Rome or would you flee to one of the Barbarian tribes? Explain your reasoning

I would flee to Barbarian tribes because in the end all the Barbarians would sack Rome and kill lots of people.

1. The evidence that supports Salvian's belief that the corruption of Rome ultimately led to the collapse of the Roman Empire is the people of Rome were becoming greedy and and they thought they were better than everyone else. They began to fight amognst themselves over things such as money, land, ect. The text states that "He contends that the Romans, who had once been virtuous and heroic, had lapsed into a degradation which rendered them, in spite of their civilization and advantages, far inferior to the untutored but sturdy barbarian." This quote means that the Romans began to think that nobody, especially uneducated barbarians, could ever be better then them. Even though the barbarians were tougher than the Romans the Romans would not admit it.

2. If I were a Roman at this time I would flee to a barbarian tribe because in the text it says that all the barbarians loved each other as family. They did not argue over money or land and even though they were uneducated they had a more suitable environment for a civilization that was going to thrive. Barbarians are also tougher so they can protect themselves without all the fancy weapons that the Romans had. Before reading this text I had no clue that the home of a barbarian is by far a better home than the home of a Roman.
